We went on a cruise to Riga with Lars and Alison. I was honestly surprised over how cozy this city was: beautiful buildings, cobblestones, cafés. And yet, at the same time, history burdens it. The Museum of the Occupation of Latvia told us the story of a country that has been occupied over and over again. The huge coal power plant works as a symbol of the old time. The men in uniform walking on the streets make me shiver. I start imagining how it would be living in a place and time where the army, military is constantly around. When the people that are supposed to protect you are the ones that hurt you. When Alva, eleven years old, asks me why the Holocaust happened, how human beings can act like that towards each other, I don't know what to answer. I can't find the words. I am still trying to understand.
